“Are you a Jew?”, asked me an African man on the streets of downtown Toronto. “But you look like a Jew!”, he insisted.

“Are you Muslim?”, asked a fellow Pakistani in Canada when she noticed me eating non-halaal food at a conference. “But you are eating meat that is not halaal?”

“Are you a Shia?” asked a colleague in Pakistan. “But you are wearing a Hamsa pendant”.

“Are you a Christian?”, asked some of my guests who were invited to my home for christmas carols in Islamabad. “Oh!” they thought.

“Are you a woman?” asked my then husband when I came home one day with my head almost shaved because it was too hot. “But how could you do this to me?”, he lamented.

I am a Goddess. I am a human. “Can you understand that?”, said I.
